England and Wales Placed Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
