Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
