Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
